Series: Lower Hutt Modernist Buildings

Exploring the State Fire and Accident Insurance Office

13 Mar 2024

Constructed: 1956. Architect: Gummer and Ford

Designed by a renowned early 20th-century firm. This building follows the celebrated Wellington State Insurance building, but now has a more clearly modernist design. It is the tallest of the 1950s buildings but is elegantly articulated to reduce its bulk and respond to its context. It sits like one of the ocean liners that inspired modernism, creating a statement at the end of Dudley Street, with its curved corner responding to the roundabout as it looks out over the river. It has been great to see this building renovated to its former glory over the last couple of years.
